The “Best of the Best” of Petroglyph Recording on Mesa Prieta in 2021

Candie has been with the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project for 20 years, and is responsible for driving their monumental recording effort. She became acquainted with Founder Katherine Wells in 2000 and immediately joined the Project at an early stage. Until 2020, she provided annual training to volunteer recording teams and continues to manage their assignments across the many proveniences of Mesa Prieta.

In 2014, Candie was recognized with a New Mexico Heritage Preservation Award for her work with recorders on Mesa Prieta and in 2017, was recognized by the New Mexico Archaeological Society with a Bice Award for Archaeological Achievement.

Formerly a registered nurse retiring after 37 years, Candie’s years of experience developing and leading programs and her involvement with patient and staff education have been an asset to her activities with the project. She also has been a long-time member of the Santa Fe National Forest Site Steward program since 2000.

Candie has volunteered with MPPP for 20 years and has serves as a petroglyph recorder, member of the Board of Directors, web site manager and since 2008, the project Petroglyph Recording Coordinator. She considers working on the mesa to be a rare privilege and the opportunity to work with MPPP volunteers to be equally rewarding.
